As Gemma laid in the hospital bed, just moments away from giving birth to a baby boy who would complete her family. But just before she was due to go under for her Caesarean section, a shocking slip of the tongue made her wonder who the father of her son really was.

For when the doctor asked her doting boyfriend Alex his name, he answered “Douglas” – and in the emotion of the moment gave away his secret double life.

And Gemma later discovered Alex not only had a whole different identity, he also had a wife.

She claims: “They say you never forget the day your children are born – and I certainly won’t. It was devastating.

"We’d had a baby and he’d been telling me he wanted to marry me when all the time he already had a wife.”

Gemma, 37, thought she’d met ‘Mr. Right’ after being introduced to factory machinist Alex Omozusi, 38, at a party.

They started dating and became inseparable. Her three children, a 12-year-old boy, and eight-year-old twin girls, from previous relationships, even called him “Daddy Alex”.

Gemma says: “During the week he stayed with his brother because it was near work, but it wasn’t long before he was practically living at my place.

“He’d go back to his flat at weekends but I didn’t mind as I was busy with the kids.”

The couple had been together for just over a year when Gemma fell pregnant.

She recalls: “He’s a typical man but I could tell he was really happy. Then we found out it was going to be a boy. He was so excited.”

Doctors told Gemma to have a C-section after having one with the twins, so when the day came, Alex was at her side as she was being prepared for surgery.

“When the doctor asked: ‘What’s your name, dad?’,” remembers Gemma, “we both answered at the exact same time. But instead of saying Alex, he said Douglas. My first thought was: ‘Why is he lying to the doctor about his name?

When Gemma came round after the birth, she claims her boyfriend of two years told her his real name was Douglas and Alex was a nickname. Emotional as she held her newborn, Gemma begrudgingly accepted his explanation.

For nine months Douglas was a doting dad to their baby but then he started going out more and more.

“I thought back to when I’d been seven weeks pregnant,” says Gemma. Douglas had made a bizarre joke saying ‘I’ve got a wife’. It seemed odd, but he was with me every weeknight, and what wife would be OK with that?”

Now suspicious, Gemma confided in a friend who suggested she look on Facebook.

“I told her Douglas didn’t bother with social media but it turns out, he did. He’d just blocked me.

"We used my friend’s account and noticed a woman with Douglas’s surname had commented on his photos.

“My heart raced. I typed her a message and asked her to call me.”

The woman called back when Douglas was sleeping.

Gemma claims: “She explained they had married just weeks before we met. It was devastating.

"It turned out he was spending the week with me and the weekend with her, at her house just a few miles away.”

Gemma immediately confronted Douglas. She says he apologized, claiming he was separated from his wife, but Gemma decided she’d given him enough chances and kicked him out.

Now nearly two years on, Douglas sees his son, but Gemma can’t get over the betrayal: “His wife also had no idea – she’s since divorced him.”

Douglas says: Gemma knew I was married and knew it was an affair. I told her early in our relationship.”

Gemma laughs: “He didn’t tell me he was married. "It was only after I gave birth that I found out he had a wife after I spotted a woman with his surname on Facebook.”
