Fruit is healthy, we all know that, but rarely do pregnant women know that there are some certain fruits they shouldn't take when they are breastfeeding. These fruits may make your baby reject feeds and they might also be allergic to them.
So here are some fruits you should avoid and why;
1. Pineapple
Pineapples are very acidic and can sour your milk if you eat pineapple before feeding your baby, your baby won't feed and if they do, it could give them nappy rash.
2. Citrus fruits
Oranges, grapes, lemons and limes are citrus fruits and a great source of Vitamin C which baby needs too. But it's acidic so it can add a sour taste to your breast milk. And this may give your baby stomach ache or make him stop feeding.
3. Kiwi
You can rarely get it here in Nigeria but I feel I should still warm breastfeeding mothers that if you want to consume them, it should be to a minimum.
4. Strawberries
Strawberries are great sources of vitamins and minerals but it doesn't go well with everybody, meaning it's an allergenic fruit. So if you or any other member of your family are allergic to strawberry (their body react to it) then you should talk to your doctor before adding them to your diet.
If your child is allergic to strawberries, here are the signs you'd notice; diarrhoea, skin rashes, fussiness, and gas formation.
5. Prunes
When prunes are consumed excessively, it may purge your child for it's a natural laxative.
6. Cherries
Cherries are purgative so it's best to avoid them when you're breastfeeding. If you have to eat it, eat very little of it if not it will purge your baby and you'll change nappies frequently.
