Causes Of Fibroid

1. Intramural Fibroids

The most common type of fibroid is intramural fibroids. These types of fibroids appear within the lining of the uterus (endometrium). Intramural fibroids may grow larger and actually stretch your womb.

2. Subserosal Fibroids

These types of fibroid form outside the uterus and is called serosa. They may grow large enough to make your womb appear bigger on one side.

3. Pedunculated Fibroids

When subserosal tumors develop a stem (a slender base that supports the tumor), they become pedunculated fibroids.

4. Submucosal Fibroids

Submucosal fibroids develop in the inner lining (myometrium) of your uterus. Submucosal tumors are very rare compared to other types, but women who have them may experience heavy menstrual bleeding and trouble conceiving.

What causes fibroid tumors?

Th main cause of fibroid is unknown, but it's believed that each tumor develops from an aberrant muscle cell in the uterus, which increases rapidly because of the influence of estrogen.

Other possible causes are;

  • Genetic changes: Many fibroids contain changes in genes that differ from those in normal uterine muscle cells.
  • Hormones: Estrogen and progesterone can promote the growth of fibroid. Fibroids shrink after menopause due to low hormones production.
  • Other growth factors: Substances that help the body maintain tissues, such as insulin-like growth factor, may affect fibroid growth.

According to research, some  factors may prevent a woman from developing fibroids. Some studies have shown that women who have had two live born children have one-half the risk of developing uterine fibroids compared to women who have had no children. The reasons for this is unknown to researchers though, whether it's having children that protect women from fibroids or whether it's fibroids that prevent women from having children. Further research is still being conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to get answers.
