Will I be betraying my friend? She said she’s okay with me attending the wedding but I’m confused if I should go or not. My best friend of 8 years broke up with her boyfriend of 3 years due to some habits my friend refuse to change about her. I was the matchmaker, Godwin was my friend from secondary school and Lara was my friend from the university. It was my 25th birthday party and Godwin who have not seen since we left school wished me a happy birthday on facebook.
I was happy to hear from him after so many years. I looked through his profile and I saw that he has really cleaned up, he works in an oil company now and his status read single. He said he would like to see me and I used that opportunity to invite him to my birthday dinner I organized later in the day. I had invited few of my friends and my fiance to a Chinese restaurant and Lara was one of those that made the cut. They can equally come along with their boyfriends’ or husbands’ if they want. Everyone came with someone that evening except Lara and Godwin. The dinner went really well and at some point, everyone was chatting with who they came with. Lara was obviously bored, she just came out of a relationship two months ago. I saw that as an opportunity to introduce her to Godwin who was also just sitting all by himself and didn’t come with anyone despite that I told him he can come with someone.
He was really happy I introduced them, according to him, I saved him the speech of walking up to her because he claimed he was gathering up the courage to meet her. Godwin has not changed a bit, he is still the same quiet and gentle guy he was back in school. The only thing that has changed about him was that he’s really loaded now. As the evening progressed, I was happy everything went well and everyone had fun, from the look of things, things are going on well with the two of them. As the end od the evening, Godwin gave me an envelope of a 100 thousand naira as a token for my birthday. I was happy, my fiance really appreciated his kind gesture. After he left, I took my friend to a corner and asked her how it went, she said she likes him but she’s keeping her fingers crossed.
Three weeks after my birthday, I’ve not heard from Lara. She’s not been returning my calls. I was returning from work one Friday evening when I decided to stop by at cinema to see a movie for the traffic to go down. I sat down behind this couple, they are all chummy and kissing and I could not just concentrate on the movie, they were a big distraction, they made me envious of not coming with my fiance. At the end of the movie, I waited till the couple was about to leave so I can see their faces. Lo and behold, it was Lara and Godwin. They were shocked to see me, they were the last person I was expecting to see. Godwin was shy when I told him I sat behind them and I saw everything happening. We laughed and departed.
Lara came to see me the next day and was gisting me of how wonderful a man Godwin is. I was happy that my friend is happy. Their relationship blossom and they were present at my wedding. Six months after my wedding, I was 5months pregnant t, I got a call from Godwin asking to see me privately. I invited him over and he told me of how much he love my friend but she has a habit of cheating serially on him. I can’t say I was shocked, I just expected that Lara won’t mess up the chance with him like she has always done with other good guys in the past because of this same behavior. He complained that he is tired of catching her in awkward situations with random men and this is the last warning he’s giving her.
I apologized on her behalf and I promised to speak with her. I called my friend and she confirmed all he has said and she promised to turn a new leaf. A month after the last time I spoke with Godwin, he came to my house with Lara and he came to personally tell me he’s done with her. She has committed the same crime over and over again. I was speechless, she was begging him and was telling me to help beg him but the poor boy has had enough. And that was the end of that relationship after 3 years. Everyone moved on with their lives but I’m still friends with Godwin, I didn’t let my friend situation with him tarnish our friendship and Lara knows.
I was at the airport one sunny afternoon waiting for my flight when I ran into Godwin again. It’s almost a year since he broke up with my friend and he was happy to see me. He said he came to pick up his fiancee and he used that opportunity to give me the invitation to his wedding and he said I must be there, he was emphatic about it. I was happy for him, he was such a gentleman. The wedding is three weeks away, I called Lara to inform her when I got back from my trip about the wedding and she casually said she wished him all the best and that I should go and have fun. I wondered if that really came from her heart. She’s yet to be in another serious relationship. I would love to attend my friend’s wedding but I don’t know if my friend is really okay with me going? I’m in a serious dilemma right now of to go or not to go?
