Thinking About Money Makes Parenting Less Satisfying

We all know that raising a child on a limited income in Nigeria is not easy.

Research suggests that parents are unhappy when they encounter greater negative emotions like magnified financial problems.

But do you know that thinking about money may make you a worse parent? Well new research says so.

New research reveals that the idea of parenting is less meaningful when people think about finances. A team of researchers conducted a study on parents to measure how money affects their parenting.

The lead author of the study Kostadin Kushlev, of the University of British Columbia (UBC), says that, simply thinking about money diminishes the meaning that mothers and fathers derive from parenting.

Their research suggests that parents are unhappy when they encounter greater negative emotions like magnified financial problems.  On the other hand, parents find joy when they experience positive emotions, satisfaction of their basic human needs, fulfillment of their social roles, and purpose and meaning in life.

Kuslev and his colleagues advice parents to make sure that they keep their work life and their family life as distinct from one another as possible,

“so that work- or money-related goals are not active when parents are spending time with their children. The less we mix our various goals and motivations, the more meaning in life we may be able to experience from our various daily activities.”
