How can I get my child to read?

0

Our house is filled with books and we read a lot. But I do not know how to teach my 6-year-old son how to read.

He shows not interest what so ever in opening a book to read. What can I do?

Parents can help their little ones learn to read and like it using the following tips:

  • Show them you like to read. Point out articles of interest to kids in books and magazines you may have. Let them see you read books for pleasure.

  • It is also recommended to read aloud to your children long before they understand what you’re saying. Point to the words on the page as you say them.

  • If your child is showing little interest in reading, show him or her how much fun reading can be. You can read aloud with your child and make noises or funny faces. If it’s a book about animals, make animals sounds. You can also use silly voices and act out the book. Most children respond well to this type of storytelling.

  • Enjoy the books together.  Look for books that are based on topics or themes that your child finds interesting.

  • Talk about the books before you start. Together, look at the picture on the cover of the book and ask your child what they think the story will be about, this will give him or her a sense of anticipation before starting the book.

  • Praise your child’s efforts at reading.

  • If a book is too hard for your child to read, then put it away.

  • Some popular book series also have movie versions. You can create a rule that your child would not be allowed to watch any movie until he/she has read the book.  So, if your child is looking forward to seeing the next Chronicles of Narnia movie or the next Harry Potter movie they’ll have to read the book first.
