I would like the opinion of mothers and fathers on this issue. I am a married man with 2 children. My first child a girl is 2, she just started school in Sept. My second a boy is still 6 months old and was on exclusive before now. I don’t earn too much and I am saving to buy a car, so my budget for house expenses is N30,000 a month. I earn N200,000 per month. My wife does not work, I still have to pay rent, we live in the surulere area of Lagos and school fees. My wife also does not have any sort of savings to use on her own. Everything she has comes from me.
Ive set up a strict budget so it means we spend only N7500 per week on everything including baby diapers, toiletries, food, everything. Now my wife is always arguing with me about the amount, last week she said she wanted 10,000. I gave her to avoid argument but I warned her that if we spend like that every week, we will go outside of our budget. I try to control the budget because i am the one providing the income but my wife makes me feel like I control her with money. I don’t intend to. I just want to make sure we have enough money to pay rent, school fees and for me to buy a car we can all use. Now she is always telling me how much the average family spends a week on food and what are other what her other friends who are also married do. I don’t want us to compare ourselves to other people and I really don’t want to increase the budget. Am I being unreasonable?
