I'm mother of two. My 3 year old child has recently been diagnosed with autism.
I started getting worried when at age 2 he was not yet clapping or waving and will not respond to his name. He also started talking very late and when you are talking to him he would not look at you or he would look at you for a few seconds and then carry his eyes away. He does not respond to his name. He cannot follow simple commands like "sit" or "no". He does not wave bye or hello. He does not play with toys. He has no interest in them. He only puts them in his mouth. That is about it. He can open or close a book or open and close a door. I believe that all this issues came about as a result of the very traumatic birth he had, I spent 48 hours in labour without a doctor. I gave birth in my church maternity center. He was stuck in birth canal and had a cord tight around his neck. I've known that there was something wrong with my child although my hubby thought I was over reacting to his difficulties. He finally got diagnosed after we were referred to a specialist here in Lagos. Now I don’t know what else to do, I am worried that this condition will cost us a lot of money for example seeing a specialist is expensive. I want to know if there are other mothers here in Lagos who have children that have been diagnosed with autism. Please how do you cope? Does your child have to go to a special school? Is there anywhere else I can get help? I am so worried and sad.
