Question Category: General I make more money than my hubby and its causing problems
Anonymous asked 4 days ago

My hubby and I have been married for a while now with children. Initially when we got married I had just joined my workplace so I wasnt earning so much. But over the years my income started to increase and now I earn around N1m per month. My husband on the other hand earns about N500k monthly. For a family of 3 children we are not doing too badly bringing in N1.5m a month. The problem now is, my income has been causing issues in our marriage.
For the past 2 years I have been the one paying our rent and half of the childrens school fees. Hubby takes care of our remaining expenses.

The problem is arising now is  that I want us to move to our own house, I told hubby that I can get a mortgage and with my savings make a down payment 30% and that with my salary it would not be a problem paying the mortgage. Paying N2m a year for rent does not make sense to me.  My hubby refused saying it should be him buying a house and not me and knowing that I was the one who bought the house would make him feel  uncomfortable. I told him that we would own the house together and that he too can also put some money monthly but he refused saying he cannot afford it. I told him that then why did he agree for me to start paying rent. He now said that shebi the money I am making is getting into my head and that since I like showing I have money he agreed so he can spend the money on other things.
Now he is saying it was wrong decision for him to allow me to pay rent that he from now he would start paying the rent, that i shouldnt think because I am making money I can start dictating what we should do and how to spend money etc. I was surprised when he started saying these things because he is the one who even advices me on how to spend money and save. Now I am think I should go ahead and buy the house in my name without his knowledge. The investment afterall is for the sake of our children. But I worry about when he eventually finds out. My question is what would you do if you were in my situation?

Keep talking to him until he sees beyond his egoistic foolishness.
