How To Calculate Your Safe Period To Avoid Pregnancy

Most women believe that they cannot get pregnant soon after they have given birth. This is untrue.

In fact the number of messages we have received from women on the Mamalette platform is proof that a woman can take in at anytime as long as she has intercourse during her unsafe period.

New mothers often don't want to use any form of contraceptive especially as they are breastfeeding a new baby and so may resort to the barrier method i.e. condom or natural methods of family planning.

So how can you calculate your safe period to avoid pregnancy?

Your safe period to have sex is day 1 to 7 and the last 4 to 5 days of your menstrual cycle. But this is only if your menstrual cycle lasts from 26 to 32 days. This can vary from woman to woman. Usually the first day of menstrual bleeding is assumed as the first day of menstrual cycle, and the last day of menstrual cycle is the day before the next period begins.

Before you begin calculating your safe period, make sure you consult your doctor to understand the effectiveness of natural family planning methods.

Please note that you cannot use this method if the average length of your menstrual cycle is less than 26 days or more than 32 days, and the variation between the shortest and longest cycles in the last six months is eight days or more.

If you have just given birth note that you can use this calculator only after six regular menstrual cycles.
