10 Dos and Don’ts When You Are Trying To Conceive

When you’re having trouble trying to conceive, your emotions are running high, and that can leave you feeling alone and confused, then you start to think about what’s next.

Almost everyone in Nigeria has helpful advice to offer when you’re trying to become pregnant.

And it might get to a stage when you may be pushed to do certain things you don’t believe in. Just hold on, be hopeful and learn the things you should do and shouldn’t do when trying to conceive.

Don’t do this

Don’t Wait to Seek Medical Help

If you want to have a baby and traditional baby making methods aren’t resulting in a plus sign, you shouldn’t wait too long before asking a specialist’ for help. The sooner you see a specialist, the more likely you are to get pregnant.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

Do you know that some women struggling with infertility also struggle with making and keeping friends? This is because they find it hard to mix with friends that have children, because they find themselves in a society where even a 15 year old can be pregnant and that can be really hard to deal with when you’re the only one who isn’t.

If this is happening to you, know that this doesn’t mean you should not free yourself and be happy. While this may happen because you are self conscious or you don’t want to hear any more news of someone giving birth instead of locking yourself in socialize, move around with people and celebrate those who are celebrating a new life. Feelings of isolation will only lead to agitation and elevated stress hormone levels so reach out, stay connected and lean on others when necessary.

Don’t Smoke Or Drink

If you are trying to conceive and you are still smoking and drinking, you are not helping matters. Both drinking and smoking can impair the health of sperm and eggs and affect sex drive.

Don’t Worry About the Best Positions For Getting Pregnant

I’ve heard there’s a myth about sex positions that can make you pregnant, and people believe certain sexual positions often are ideal for conception, while others are said to be less ideal. Changing positions can make intercourse more exciting for both partners, which leads to better conditions for conception. Certain positions, such as sitting or standing during intercourse, however, may discourage sperm from traveling upstream, but instead it will run out.

Put Too Much Pressure On Yourself Or Your Partner

Sometimes despite the best effort it may take some time for a woman to conceive, pressure then start coming from the family members, friends and even the couple. As time stretches on, it’s easy to become discouraged and lay the blame on yourself or on your husband. And although this feeling is natural and hard to avoid, it’s important to remember that you and your spouse are taking this journey together. So instead support each other and love each other the more. While the woman may especially be disturbed by her in-laws, make sure you don’t let them get to you. Worrying and stress will only make it harder for you to conceive.

Don’t Have Too Much Sex

Having too much sex even during ovulation will not necessarily increase your chances of getting pregnant. Some men’s sperm count will deduce if they ejaculate too often, so having sex around the time of ovulation helps increase your chance of getting pregnant. Often, when couples are trying to conceive, sex becomes an obligation rather than an intimate activity between two lovers. The stress caused by feeling obligated to have sex can interfere with conception, best chance of conception comes from having unprotected intercourse two to three times a week.

Do this

Lay Low Right After Intercourse

You probably have heard someone say this to you before, it’s good to lay in bed for 10 to 15 minutes after intercourse. Don’t go into the bathroom to wash yourself after sex, just hold your partner and if you wait 10 to 15 minutes, the sperm that is going to get into the cervix will be in the cervix, but when you start moving around, the sperm might not reach its destination.

Check Your BMI

Maintain a healthy BMI. Weight affects both a woman’s ability to ovulate and the health of a male’s sperm. If you or your spouse is overweight, consider a healthy eating and exercise regime. If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is too light, your ovulatory cycle won’t be regular. Having too high BMI also presents a problem.

Communicate with Your Partner

Infertility can put a strain in your marriage, hopes are dashed and both the couple are unsure of what will happen next. And although they might not say it out loud, they might be blaming themselves for the infertility, this is however the time when the couple should come closer and become strong in their weakness. When you work together the burden becomes easier to bear, but when your relationship is strained it might even affect your conception, because the woman will be stressed up, which is not good.

Healthy Habits

Eat right and eat well. Your husband should not keep his phone near his testicles when it is inside his pocket, avoid wearing tight fitted trousers, all this can affect your sperm production. Exercise and stay fit.

Know Your Ovulation Period

Ovulation period is your fertility period, knowing your ovulation period can help you in timing when you should have sex to make babies and that as well helps you in how to conceive even faster.
