Useful tips when packing a baby’s diaper bag.
This guide is for all new Nigerian mums out there. Experienced mums can also find it useful.
When packing your baby’s diaper bag it pays to be prepared because you may not know what situation you’ll be in or what you’ll need in order to keep a baby happy. And this is especially so when you are out of the house.
A well-stocked diaper bag can actually save the day.
What you will need in your baby’s diaper bag will depend on where you are going and the age of your baby.
The following are essential items that should be included in every diaper bag:
- Diapers. Pack one diaper for one hour that you’re out and maybe a few extra, just in case.
- Wipes. This is absolutely essential for cleaning messes when you are on the move. Make sure you have plenty of them.
- Diaper rash cream. Not every baby needs this, but if you use this for your little one, make sure you keep one in the diaper bag.
- Changing pad or blanket. An absolute essential. While not many people use this, a changing pad is the most hygienic option for baby changing.
- Burp cloths. Put in as many as you think you’ll need, then add a few more.
- Blanket. Especially for young babies. You don’t know how cold where you will be going to, is.
- Bottles and formula (that is if you’re not breastfeeding) Also make sure you have a flask of boiled water so you can simply shake and go when you’re ready to feed. It also helps to pre-measure both the water and formula so that no extra thinking or time is required.
- Baby food. If your baby is on solids, keep 2 or more store bought baby foods in your diaper bag or any food you have already prepared. Baby cereal should also be in the bag.
- Medication. You will never know when you will need medication like infant paracetamol or Oragel® (teething pain gel). So put this in your bag just in case.
- Change of clothes. It is advisable to have at least one or two extra clothes with you when you are out of the house. Accidents happen.
- Toys. Your baby will need to be entertained or preoccupied. So don’t forget to pack your child’s favourite toy(s) when you leave your house.
- Nylon bags. You can use this to store soiled diapers or clothes.
