The Strange Parts Of The Body That Gets Bigger During Pregnancy

I know some parts of the body like the tummy, boobs and buttocks becomes bigger during pregnancy. But I wasn’t aware that some parts of the body can also experience little changes too until I got pregnant.

And these parts of the body were where I wasn’t expecting any changes.

1. Bigger feet

My legs were all swollen and bigger before I got pregnant I was using size 38, and I easily get my size of cute shoes. After giving birth to my child, I’ve started using size 39 or 40. And I can’t even wear some of my shoes again, maybe I’ll just give them out. When you are pregnant, changes occur to the body, and it may not go away even after you give birth.  It is the doctors’ believe that the arch of the foot flattens down, this is probably due to the increased looseness of the joints and the extra weight during pregnancy.

2. Bigger nose

How I hated my nose when I was pregnant. During the first trimester of my pregnancy, I looked into the mirror and saw a very wide nose that doesn’t look like my own. It was flatter, wider and it seemed it just happened overnight. Nose spreading called rhinitis of pregnancy is another symptom of pregnancy and it’s caused by high oestrogen level.  Although, a woman told me I’d be giving birth to a girl when she saw the size of my nose, but that was proved to be wrong scientific data and because I gave birth to a boy.

3. Big nipples

It’s not like I’ve always had small nipples, yet I’m surprised at how large my nipple got when I became pregnant. I wasn’t prepared for how changed the size of the areola (The skin around the nipple) looked, especially around my third trimester into the pregnancy. In my case, the brown just looked like a plate on my breast.

Trust me, I read about it, and I learnt that it’s perfectly normal during pregnancy and that your body is preparing for breastfeeding. Be rest assured that the changes to your nipples will not be there forever, although they might never remain the same again. Get used to it.

4. Fat fingers

Towards the last stage of my pregnancy, my hands looked like a sausage roll, yup, that’s how big it was. And I had to stop using my ring, it was digging into my flesh and I had to actually soak them in ice water before I could remove them. I’m sure if I had waited till the very last day of my pregnancy, I wouldn’t be able to remove it again. This phenomenon is called oedema, and more than half of pregnant women experience that kind of swelling. The swelling is not just in the finger but legs, feet, and ankles, and this is more common during the last trimester of pregnancy.

5. Swollen gums

During pregnancy, when I’m brushing my teeth I usually see a lot of blood. And it’s like a scene in a horror movie, I will see so much blood coming out, but it’s totally normal too. It is caused by gingivitis, almost half of pregnant women experience a bit of it, and it can cause bleeding and swollen gums, which is due to high sensitivity to plaque. If you are worried about this, use a soft toothbrush.

6. Wider rib cage

In the third trimester of my pregnancy, I felt so much like The Rock in a skirt. I mean, my chest and rib cage were expanded and added four inches and three bra-strap sizes, probably because my internal organs had to make space for the new “roommate”.  After a, year though, things returned to almost normal.

But despite that you developed a gigantic nipple, the rock’s chest and a clown’s feet during pregnancy when you finally have your baby in your arms, you’ll still have a deeper sense of respect and appreciation for your body.

Mamalettes! what other strange changes happened to your body while you were pregnant?
