Study- Nigerian mothers demonstrate good knowledge and positive attitude towards breastfeeding

Ways to breastfeed

Breast milk is the best nutrition for babies. Breast-feeding provides many health benefits for both baby and mother.

A lot of Nigerian women understand and are sensitised about the importance of breast-feeding. I remember that even as a teenager, I attended one of the many ‘Breastfeeding Week’ clinics organised by the Lagos State government. It is the memory from this clinic that influenced by strong decision to breastfeed my child from day 1.

A recent research done in Nigeria on breastfeeding now shows that Nigerian women ‘demonstrate’ a good knowledge and postive attitude towards breastfeeding.

The study assessed breastfeeding knowledge, attitude and techniques of postures, positioning, hold practice and latch-on among Nigerian mothers. 383 consenting lactating Nigerian mothers who breast-fed for 6 months and up to two years participated in the study.

Of the women that were surveyed, 71.3% of them had good knowledge about breastfeeding while 54.0% had a positive attitude towards breastfeeding.

Also, most of the mothers (71.3%) practiced the advisable breastfeeding postures, preferred sitting on a chair to breastfeed and utilized cross-cradle hold and baby-to-breast latch-on.
