Tonsilitis is caused by a virus and is characterised by swollen tonsils and sore throat, it's usually very painful and the discomfort can be relieved through home remedy.
The symptoms of tonsilitis include sore throat, running nose, nasal congestion, coughing, sneezing and difficulty swallowing here are ways to elief the discomfort of tonsilitis;
- Gargling warm water and salt solution. You can make this by mixing a tablespoon of salt with 240 mL of warm water, this can be gargled by children from age 8 upwards.
- Drinking warm or cold liquids can be very soothing. Warm tea, cold juice, hot soup and the likes help, just don't make it too hot and scald your tongue in the process.
- Pain medicine such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can help relieve sore throat painbut before using the medicine, read the instruction on it and do not give a child below age 6 this kind of drug. Aspirin shouldn't be taken by children below 20.
- Rest
- Throat lozengess also help relieve sore throat although it shouldn't be given to small children or taken by people with health issues. Again, check the label before use.
Antiseptic mouthwash, decongestants and antihistamines, won't help relieve the discomfort of a sore throat and shouldn't be used for children. If you or your child has a sore throat, sudden fever and swollen lumph nodes (small, bean-shaped glands throughout the body) ythis might be a sign of bacteria infection, see your doctor and get tested for strep throat.
While taking your drugs, get a lot of rest, if your child is the one with tonsillitis let them stay at home for a day or two while taking their drugs.
