Having A Baby After Fertility Problems ‘Strengthens Relationships’

Happy-couple2The African society has a strong traditional heritage, where children are seen as a important aspect of every marriage.

Infertility can have a big impact on a couple’s relationship and couples who undergo fertility treatment also experience a rollercoaster of emotions.

Previous studies suggest that when couples experience fertility problems, this can affect them physically and psychologically.

There is also evidence that unsuccessful fertility treatment may lower quality of life, increase stress levels, anxiety and depression for the couple.

Infertility can also have a negative impact on a couple’s relationships with family and friends as they try to hide their fertility troubles from family and friends or get tired with constant questions from concerned relatives.

New research now suggests that women who have a baby after experiencing fertility issues are more likely to stay in a relationship with their partner.

The study which involved 47,515 Danish women, showed that women who did not give birth to a child were three times more likely to divorce or end the relationship with their partner at the time of the study, compared with women who gave birth to a child.

Trille Kristina Kjaer of the Unit of Survivorship at the Danish Cancer Society Research Center in Denmark commented that,

“Prior studies show that fertility problems may cause marital or sexual distress for couples, which may potentially lead to separation or divorce,”

“Our study investigated if women who did not have a child after a fertility evaluation were likely to end the relationship with that partner.”

“Our findings suggest that not having a child after fertility treatment may adversely affect the duration of a relationship for couples with fertility issues.”

Do you agree that having a baby after fertility problems strengthens relationships?
