A lot of myths abound and have been passed on over the years from generation to generation, however, there are some that are weird and plainly just superstitious.
A Mamalette asked this question on our platform;
“Is it true that putting a child in the middle of the bed i.e in between two people when sleeping makes the child not grow well in terms of weight?”
Oluwabamikee Adekanye-Fajorin
“Superstitious believe! As I am typing now my baby is lying in between my hubby and I.”
Abigail Aighobahi
“Be careful let the baby not suffocate because I read somewhere that a baby died of such.”
Uchenna Lovelyn
“Hearing this for the first time …but it is wrong because adults can roll over the baby and kill the baby by suffocating him or her.”
Biebele Françoise Ajijola
“Big time lie. In short once there’s no baby cot, that’s the safest place for baby so baby won’t fall down or hit head on wall when he/she roll.”
Olayide Mary
“If the child is less than 6 months, he can be suffocated under the duvet and thus lead to SIDS.”
Chigozie Chiaha Okorie
“Putting a child in between two sleeping adults has its disadvantages e.g rolling on the child while in deep slumber and causing suffocation to the child, cover cloth accidentally covering the face of the child and not allowing proper breathing. It does not have any effect whatsoever on the weight or growth of the child.”
Aderonke Arogundade Amanyunose
“Superstitious believe”
Chika Odili Nwafor
Superstitious? Yes, Safe? No. From the comments of Mamalettes above it can be deduced that indeed they believe this proposition to be superstitious, with no bit of truth to it. Our Mamalettes are also of the opinion that it’s not safe to have the baby sleep between his parents, this is because there’s the risk of one of them rolling over and crushing/suffocating the baby. You can read more about this here.
