When I had my last baby which was in fact, unplanned, I was asked by my gynaecologist what form of contraceptive I intend to use, but the last thing on my mind then was sex not to talk of contraception.
The talk was postponed until some other time, during which I discussed my options with my gynaecologist, and what I know now is that an IUD (Intrauterine device) is an effective form of contraception.
It’s a fact that condom is now only 82% effective at preventing pregnancy. Using condoms is effective in preventing chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases. Safe sex never goes out of fashion trust me.
And there are a lot of reasons why getting an IUD is a better contraceptive option, it’s not just effective in preventing pregnancy, it’s also very cheap, and they last for 5-10 years depending on the device you choose.
The insertion of the device is quick and easy. Firstly, an internal examination will be performed to determine the position of the womb, after which the doctor inserts a speculum. The cervix, the womb and the vagina are washed, and you may or may not be given a local anaesthetic spray.
An instrument is used to hold the cervix open, then the size of the womb is measured and the IUD is inserted. After the doctor has checked and confirmed that everything is okay, he cuts the strings.
Yeah, I’m sure you are imagining how painful it will be, but the pain is not as intense as labour pains.
For women who haven’t given birth, the pain will be a little more intense but if you’ve had a baby the process is less painful, so there is a difference in how much pain people feel when getting an IUD insert. And the pain is especially less if you have someone talking to you while the process is going on.
Just like every other medical procedure, infection, pregnancy, perforation of the uterus are the risks involved. But there are more things that makes it a pretty attractive choice.
These were the things my doctor made known to me, I don’t know her particular attraction with IUD as a form of contraceptive and although I’ve not decided what form of contraceptive I’d go for, I think I something after all. I might get an IUD insert.
Mamalette! What form of contraceptive method do you use? And would you get an IUD for family planning?
