Most people who didn't use gas to cook have turned to gas and electric stoves since the price of kerosene has skyrocketed. However, people have to realise the risk and dangers that comes with using gas to cook as the methane used for combustion is highly flammable.

Cooking with gas cooker is faster, easier and less expensive but you have to consider the risk that gas cooker poses if handled carelessly. Accidents involving gas cookers are usually fatal and that's because gas is invisible and can only be smelt so if you don't detect leakage and saturation the room might get filled up with methane gas and this is very dangerous.

Here are some things you should watch out for when cooking with gas;

1. Watch out for leaking cylinders

If a cylinder which contains gas is leaking, some people might try to seal the leakage with cello tape but to be on a safer side, immediately remove the cylinder from the house to prevent the gas spreading all around the kitchen and causing a fire.

2. Leave the cylinder outside

For safety reasons, leave the cylinder outside, so that in case a fire happens, it doesn't destroy lives and property. If the cylinder is outside and an explosion occurs, the damage will be minimal.

3. Ensure the stoppers are closed before going to sleep

The knob used in controlling and regulating the gas is called stoppers, so before going to sleep at night ensure the stoppers are closed and in the right position. If the stopper is left open, the gas can leak out and cause a fire at anytime.

4. Do not pour water into a burning pot

In the case where pot is burning (for instance, palm oil issue), don't pour water into the pot, instead, close the stopper, then pour sand into the burning pot.

Immediately you start smelling gas in your kitchen, take out the cylinder, check if it's leaking and get it fixed, don't take it back in unless you fix it. May we not see the wrath of fire.
