Editorial Team

You've heard all about how your diet has to change now that you are pregnant, this includes what you eat and drink, eating foods that contain calcium, folic acid, chlorine, fibre and omega 3s is good for baby and you. But do you know the foods you should avoid when you are pregnant?

Here are the foods you shouldn't eat while pregnant;

#1. Caffeine

While pregnant, taking a high dose of caffeine in coke, cocoa, tea and coffee increases the risk of a miscarriage. Experts advise that pregnant women take decaffeinated drinks especially during the first trimester of their pregnancy.

#2. Soft cheeses

Avoid soft cheese of any sort be it goat, cow or any other veined variety of soft cheese. This is because they may be contaminated with listeria (a bacteria that causes food poisoning) if unsterilized. Meanwhile, pregnant women have weak immune system which makes them prone to food-borne illness which if contracted during the first trimester can lead to birth defect or miscarriage.

#3. Deli Meat

Deli (sliced and cooked meat, chicken, sausage....) products might become contaminated with listeria if they're not handled properly at the manufacturing plant or at the deli itself.

Whatever cooked meat you buy outside, microwave or refry it before eating so as to kill the bacteria. Cook pork, lamb or beef very well before eating.

#4. Fish

Fish is actually good as it contains omega 3 fatty acid, but, so many fishes contain mercury which is dangerous to baby's brain development. And here are the list of fish high in mercury; swordfish, tilefish, king mackerel, shark, and albacore tuna.

You can eat salmon and sardine though and no matter the kind of fish you want to eat, it should be well-cooked. Eat eggs, milk, soy beverages, juice, yogurt, bread, cereal, and margarine which are fortified with omega-3s.

#5. Eggs

Don't avoid egg totally but eggs contaminate easily with salmonella, buy refrigerated eggs and any egg with cracked or unclean shells should be thrown out. And do not eat raw eggs.

#6. Alcohol

I'm sure you know that taking alcohol during pregnancy is not safe, excessively or minutely alcohol isn't good for you when pregnant. Immediately you drink, it goes straight to the placenta, your baby drinks too. Women who drink frequently have a high chance of giving birth to children with mild or severe learning disabilities, physical abnormalities, and disorders of the central nervous system.
