Spitting up is common in babies and rarely signifies a serious problem.
Babies often spit up out of their mouths or noses, when they get too much milk too fast.
According to the Mayo Clinic, spitting up tends to peak at age 4 months, and most babies stop spitting up by age 12 months.
If you are concerned that your baby is spitting up excessively, the American Academy of Pediatrics offers suggestions on what you can do;
- Feed smaller amounts more frequently, rather than fewer larger feedings.
- Take frequent "burp breaks" during feedings, and burp baby after a feeding.
- Avoid tummy time immediately after a feeding; keep baby upright for 30 minutes after eating.
- Discuss alternative formulas with your pediatrician if baby shows signs of formula intolerance.
- Talk to the pediatrician about mixing a small amount of cereal with baby's formula to help prevent reflux.
