Have you recently discovered that your baby’s little milk teeth are discoloured? And are you worried that your baby’s teeth look stained and brown?
If the answers to the above question is yes, read the cause of teeth discolouration in the babies and what to do;
1. Illness During Infancy Or During Early Childhood
Illness such as high fever while teething, non-balanced nutrition, down syndrome or congenital syphilis, and any sort of infection when baby is teething, can cause your baby’s teeth to be discoloured.
2. Poor Quality Of Tooth Enamel
If the enamel of your baby’s teeth is not of good quality, caused by a condition known as hypo calcification which could be as a result of various factors such as a large deposit of plaque on your baby’s teeth or due to over sucking on citrus fruits, all these can cause discolouration in your baby’s teeth.
3. Too Much Fluoride
If you brush your baby’s teeth with a large amount of fluoride or you’ve been mixing your baby’s formula with water that contains fluoride, this can cause your baby to be exposed to a condition known as enamel fluorosis. A condition that causes your baby to have light white marks or streaks on their teeth.
4. Medication Containing Iron
Using certain medications and supplements that contain iron for your baby might sometimes cause a dark stain on your baby’s teeth.
5. Not Brushing Properly Or frequently
Your baby is never too young to start brushing, as infrequent or improper brushing can cause tooth discoloration. Brush your baby’s teeth as soon as it starts coming out and remember to schedule an appointment with a pediatric dentist as soon as your baby is one-year-old.
What should I do If my baby’s teeth are discoloured?
If your baby’s teeth are discoloured it can leave you feeling worried, but something can be done;
- Instill dental hygiene in your baby from an early age. Don’t let your baby sleep with the milk bottle in his mouth.
- Even before your baby begins teething, clean your baby’s gums and teeth daily. And once the first teeth are out, visit your baby’s dentist.
