5 Ways To Be A House Manager, Not A House Slave

When I first had my first child, it was tough because I was a house slave. There was a particularly eventful day when I burst into frustrated tears. I’d been doing the house chores since morning and it seems like there’s still tons of things to do, as I made to pick up the laundry bag and start doing the laundry, my baby cried from her sleep.

I went to pick her up and breastfeed her, thinking about all the things waiting for my attention, I didn’t know when I burst into tears, feeling sorry for myself, I felt tired, drowsy, frustrated and unloved.

I scaled through it though, but I learnt some lessons from the experience and I thought I should share;

1. Know your position

Remember you are not a slave, but a home-maker and manager. Don’t try to hard to save the day or make the house free of chaos. Each day, there’s something to accomplish, whether you accomplish it fully or not, just try your best to make the most of your time, but don’t try too much and break down.

2.  Know your worth

When you know your worth, it becomes easier to manage things. You are not just a house wife but a creator, a manager, a mother, a wife, a daughter, a hard worker among so many other things.

When you know your worth, you’ll be eager to manage your home, show appreciation for the life you have being given, and happily take charge of the responsibilities you have; which are your child and husband.

3. Be prepared for everything coming your way

Don’t be caught unawares, a typhoid might arise in the middle of the night, get your medicine box equipped with drugs including oral rehydration salt. And when your home seems to always be in constant shambles, don’t despair, keep on top of things by always doing chunks of works on busy days, so they don’t pile up.

4. Have a written daily routine

Each day for each chore, Monday to Friday, if you do the cooking on Sunday, shopping and laundry on Saturday, Ironing on Wednesday etc, even if you use just one hour for each chore, you will accomplish something at the end of the day. Have a schedule that’ll work fine for you.

5. Clean on the go

Don’t wait till your house looks like the rat’s den before you start cleaning, when you are going to the bedroom and you see a pair of socks on the floor, pick them up, you can pick up a broom and do a quick sweep before leaving for work, then grab a water can and wash your hand, you just cleaned up the house Mamalette!

And in all, don’t strive too much to take care of your home and forget to pay attention to your husband, remember, your house, your child and your husband are what makes up your home, don’t neglect one for the other.

Activities You Can Do To Ring In The New Year

Everyone gets excited about ringing in the New Year.

In Nigeria, one common way to ring in the New Year depending on religious affliation, is to go to church or pray at home. But do you know that there are additional ways for you to ring in the New Year with children?

The following are fun things you can do with your children on New Year’s eve.

1. Writing New Year resolutions or wishlists

One fun way to bring in a New Year is to have your children write out their New Year resolutions on a piece of paper. They can also fill out what they learned this year and what they hope to do next year.

2. Create a blessings jar

The end of an old year is a good time to reflect on all the blessing received during the year.

A good idea to help instill an attitude of gratitude in your child’s heart is to create a blessing jar. While reflecting together as a family, every member of the family can write a blessing they have received on a piece of paper, fold it up, and stick it in a jar.

Next New Year’s Eve, you can pour out all the blessings from the previous year and go through it together as a family.

3. Have a New Year’s eve party

This party does not have to involve decor, music or heavy preparations.

You can choose to have a simple slumber or pyjama party with your children and their friends in your living room.

Bring out pillows, duvets, mats, stuffed toys and some DVDs the children can watch e.g.  Toy StoryKung Fu Panda, CarsHarry PotterPrincess Diaries, Hannah Montana etc.

If you have a karaoke machine, let the kids be as loud as they want while singing their favourite songs.

4. Create a time capsule

You can choose to create a time capsule instead of a blessings jar. Have your children write anything they want to remember along with their resolutions in a container and then hide it till next year.

You can imagine how much fun it will be to read all their thoughts from the previous year, next New Year’s eve.

5. Watch other countries ring in the New Year on TV

Once you’ve said your prayers and wished all members of the family, Happy New Year, you can all seat down to watch how other countries ring in the New Year on TV.

If you are in the city of Lagos, you can also watch, the Lagos Countdown, The Biggest New Year’s Eve Party in Africa which is held at the Bar Beach on TV with the kids.

This event can be streamed live or watch on various Nigerian TV stations.
